Jupiter in Cancer:
Abundant Spirit
Astrology by Cathy Zornes
Each year, the planet Jupiter transits a new sign of the Zodiac, its expansive nature
bestowing light on another part of our conscious awareness. In July 2001, Jupiter
moved into the sign of Cancer, where it will reside through July 2002.
The sign of Cancer is associated with things near and dear to us: our home, our family,
our history, our roots, things we treasure, and, specifically, our emotional attachment
to these things. The Cancer nature is very graceful and poised on the surface, yet
defensive and protective; one should never underestimate the deep and profound feelings,
nor the need for security and the fierceness with which they cling to that which
provides safety and comfort. In addition, there is a mistrust of that which threatens
our sustenance.
Wherever Jupiter's energy resides, things often happen in a big way. The planet Jupiter
is associated with growth and expansion, abundance and greatness. Its effect is most
often thought to be beneficial, however, its influence not only enlarges one's perspective,
but also tends to blow things out of proportion, beyond reason.
On the human side, Jupiter is associated with abundant generosity, life, liberty
and happiness, optimism, spiritual faith, trust and idealism. It expands our view
to include foreign cultures, all religions, and a wide range of philosophies and
beliefs. It puts our focus on large-scale efforts, it broadens our viewpoint and
widens our horizons.
The United States Chart
The chart for the U.S. Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776, not only has
the Sun in Cancer, but also Jupiter conjunct Venus in the early degrees of Cancer.
The United States is having what astrologers refer to as its Jupiter return (when
transiting Jupiter returns to its natal position) as well as a transit of Jupiter
passing over the Sun (identity).
Although there are several charts for the United States, this chart was most interesting
to me as it speaks to the independence and greatness of our nation's spirit, which
has once again recently come into focus. With Jupiter conjunct Venus, we are a peaceful
bunch, yet, we also strive for the American dream, we all want to become millionaires,
and our material indulgences and monetary extravagances can be seen as wasteful.
Yet, our nature is peaceful and kind.
There is some confusion as to the time of day the Declaration of Independence was
signed, therefore there are several charts. One has Gemini rising, another has Sagittarius
rising. In using either of these charts, however, we find that transiting Pluto is
opposing transiting Saturn, in the 1st house (self) and the 7th house (open enemies).
We are bound to struggle for several years, and our world as we once knew it has
unequivocally changed. There will be many new controls exercised to protect our country
and its people, and the excesses and freedoms we once enjoyed may now be a thing
of the past. How will we handle this energy?
With Jupiter in Cancer, our emotional responses may be greater than usual. While
Cancer is usually focused on the personal circle, Jupiter's influence will widen
the focus of concern to many. We may see an increase in patriotism, an extended warmth
and generosity to our fellow man. Its influence impels us to by sympathetic and give
comfort to those in need. We may reach beyond our own boundaries in our need to secure
what we hold dear, not only our personal resources, but our lifestyle and belief
that good will overcome evil.
The focus will be on our homeland, our personal security, protection of loved ones,
what we own and value. We seek security of home, family, property, basic necessities
of life and the freedoms that our democracy offers. We may see changes in the economy
with regard to the buying and selling of homes, food products, supplies, and an increased
generosity among people and businesses.
Another emphasis will be the nurturing of our children -- but, not only from an emotional
standpoint. We will also want to educate them on history, religious beliefs, cultural
differences, protecting our country's interests and those of our allies.
There can be a renewed sense of patriotism and a love for our country, as well as
an interest in its rich history. We look up to the fathers of our country, its defenders
and protectors. Our spirit is strong, our reach is wide; we will be resolute in our
abounding optimism and faith in the future.
