Laughing in the Fun House
by Wendy Garrett

Lighten up!

The one thing I can't live without?

My smile.

The key to having fun is to remember that we are all actors. Each has chosen a part for the specific purpose of learning. Some parts require total immersion. Others are cameos. If you truly want to get it right, you have to tune in and see what the part requires and how much you can improvise.

Since it's my script, I choose to improvise and allow that to take me in new directions to stretch my ability and test those I am working with so that they may awaken from the illusion. As soon as we wake up, we get to laugh again. I keep pinching myself to stay awake, because I don't want to miss the punch lines. (Now I know why I have such odd sleep patterns.)

I find myself, this time, walking the path backward. I have done the other route of seeing where I was going but, this time, I know what lies ahead so I want to see what I missed when I kept my focus forward. I find interesting things that way...after the noise dies down from all those who tell me to turn around so I don't fall over the stick or drop off the boulder. The funny thing, I know the stick is there and when I fall, they will laugh. That is the point.

I am not here to suffer. I heal my hurts if I get them and keep walking. Walking backward allows me to see those who get left behind or overlooked in the rush to the finish line. I can help them if they see me or send energy if they don't. Or I can accept them as they are. I ask what is for their highest good before I do anything so as not to interfere with the growth process.

I have compassion for those who, while facing forward, are still unable to see the signs. They gave themselves quite a maze and are still trying to clear the illusion. I've been there and, in this phase of backward, still am in "Ah-mazement!"

I love the challenge of pulling myself back from the brink when I step over. I know those facing forward who see through the illusion will be there to lend a hand. We are working with trust from different vantage-points. I accept the hand, laugh at my predicament, and move forward with a better understanding of how difficult it is to remain open to spirit when you are too preoccupied with what is on the path...as opposed to how you are walking it.

Walking backwards requires humility, trust, perseverance and belief that you are here only for one purpose: to learn how to love. It's hit and miss. We come back to refine the ability or dis-abilty. And during the interim, we help our co-creators. It is up to us to determine our tools and remember. The great thing about remembering...it doesn't always mean it's over. Sometimes, that's when the party actually starts. Then it gets really fun and funny!

You are now Alice in Wonderland, Dorothy in Oz, or Neo in the Matrix. You know and you don't know. You have a frame of reference and you start to do the math to get out of the maze or the illusion, and yet, realizing you aren't really here! The chess piece you have chosen is moving and you are calling the shots from somewhere else. You run into others capable of the same thing. Some are dark, some are light and some a mix of both. But you are all aware of your multidimensional comings and goings and that is the carrot. It leaves you wanting to know more.

How to determine if what appears to be unreal is real? It is a challenge. You control the perimeters. Thought is key. When you operate based on fear, what you see will scare you. Come at it from love and you know you have nothing to fear. Easy to say, the lesson is difficult to learn. But fear is part of the package. We refine it as we carry it into each dimension until we ultimately walk it out to pure love.

What a joke to know none of this is real but what you do still counts. Unfair? No. We signed up for the class or we wouldn't be here. So trust you are in the right place at the right time and ask what your joke is. Where is your smile? If you can't walk backward, watch those who do and keep getting up only to do another pratfall with the next step...When we are in too much pain to laugh at ourselves, clowns offer themselves for our amusement. If we can see a bit of ourselves in the effort we can indeed lighten up and enjoy the journey.

If you want a piece of learning, look to the Cheshire cat. The all-knowing speaks volumes with that smile. There is a saying from the I-Ching: "Words are birds and experience the tree they roost in. The power of inner truth is rooted in the tree. Birds come and go."

No use taking it all too seriously. Those who truly know, won't tell you what you are doing wrong even if you ask. They know better. It's called non-interference. And, in the end, only you can determine your truth. They can offer suggestions or a choice of direction but you are fully responsible in determining where you direct your energy. They may even lead you in the opposite direction to give you more incentive to walk it out. After all, the most common response to criticism, no matter how constructive, is denial.

When you become adept, you stop asking for directions from the scarecrow. Even so, lots of people fall for the wild goose chase. The outcome is the same. Everyone dies at the end. What do you do in the meantime? That's what counts. The best joke? There is no death. We just change form. We are not this mortal shell. We are essence. We are eternal. We are here to learn.

Whatever it takes, wake up. You don't want to miss this punch line. It's the best you've ever written. Remember you are orchestrating this entire thing and all that you see is a reflection. What are you trying to tell yourself? Lighten up. Walk those emotions out and find your smile. It's the joy that gives us our connection with the Divine...not the other way around.

The Cheshire cat grins at me from the poster on the wall. Makes me smile. Also reminds me talk is cheap. It's what I do that says who I am. After all, what do I know?

Don't know where it comes from but I appreciate the humor: Some days you're the dog. Some days you're the fireplug. That's life... Thanks for being part of the joke!
