Local psychologist helps those
with grief from loss of pets
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Louise Kaplanski admits she's a cat freak. She even talks
to her cats like people, but who doesn't treat their pet like one of the family?
Pets are unique because their love for their owner is unconditional, they don't criticize
or judge and they ask so little. So when a pet dies, it creates a huge loss in the
owners' life. There are tears, depression, loneliness, unexpressed emotions and often
fear that friends and co-workers won't and can't understand the loss.
That's where Louise Kaplanski, Ph.D., comes into the picture. Whether it's a horse,
a dog or a canary, she knows how painful losing a pet can be. As a licensed psychologist
in Overland Park, Kan. and Kansas City, Mo. she offers an affordable therapy/support
group and individual counseling for those who have lost a pet.
"Others may mean well but cannot understand the depth of your loss," Kaplanski
said. "As a passionate animal lover, I can help you get through this difficult
experience in a healing manner, leaving you feeling heard and understood."
Kaplanski has the ability to sense what each individual needs and tailors treatment
accordingly. In addition to pet loss therapy, she specializes in couples' issues,
how to make healthy lifestyle changes, healthy and creative ways to deal with stress,
coping with chronic pain especially for patients who suffer from fibromyalgia and
chronic fatigue syndrome, overcoming depression and anxiety, achieving a sense of
balance, and awakening new life energy and integration of body, mind and spirit.
"My experience and training allow me to choose therapeutic interventions and
techniques that will 'click' and resonate with you," she said. "Most important,
I believe that each of us knows what is needed for our own healing. The right therapist
at the right time is like a skilled guide accompanying you on the journey and offering
hope, insight, counsel and encouragement along the way."
Louise Kaplanski received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the APA-accredited
California School of Professional Psychology in 1997. She has been working in the
mental health field since 1990.
Louise Kaplanski's office is located at 10550 Quivira Rd., Suite 330, Overland
Park, Kan. (Doctors' Medical Building at Overland Park Regional Medical Center).

Weekend retreat
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Lama Surya Das, one of America's foremost Buddhist teachers,
will teach a weekend meditation retreat in Kansas City on March 29-31, the first
time ever in this area.
With all the stress and anxiety many of us have -- post 9/11, mid-recession and after
the ice storm -- there is incredible value to be gained by taking time away from
the normal busy-ness of our lives and stopping to reflect on what's truly important
to us. The weekend retreat will provide an opportunity for such reflection and an
opportunity to learn more about how to incorporate meditation into our daily lives.
Lama Surya Das is author of the best-selling book, Awakening the Buddha Within, as
well as several other books, tapes and videos. The retreat is sponsored by the American
Buddhist Center at Unity Temple on the Plaza and The Cornerstone Foundation.
The retreat format will provide ample time for sitting meditation, as well as unstructured
time to walk among the woods and sacred gardens of the Tall Oaks Conference Center
in Linwood, Kan., located about 30 minutes from Kansas City. The retreat is designed
for beginners who have never meditated and for more advanced practitioners.
Registration is $119 for a non-residential package, which includes lunch and dinner
on Saturday and Sunday.
