"Invocation," by David Brian Erickson
Copyright © David Brian Erickson

The word "Invocation" elicits in me a feeling of calm, an expansion of awareness, and a sense of God-consciousness, all of which inspired this painting.

My work is often both allegorical and symbolic, for example my use of briar roses and lilies, both of which have traditional allegorical meaning in Western art (love, passion and purity). However, I realized that these images had deeper symbolic meaning for me, and upon further reflection, I found that briar roses and madonna lillies are personal symbols for life and light. Briar roses are thorny, inextricably entwined and achingly beautiful -- in a word, life. And in the morning, when the madonna lily opens to the sun, it bursts forth with such a radiance and clarity that it seems to illuminate the very day itself – light.
