A Last Grasp at Peace
by Michael M. Meginn Jr.
I've seen this moment coming for quite some time now. During the Martin Luther King
weekend, I saw it in action. I have always wanted peace in my life and this world.
I've had some pretty good conversations on the pros and cons of war in Iraq. Because
this topic is religious and political, it is a topic that draws many views and beliefs.
None of which are wrong. I choose not to judge other views. However, I do have my
views about this topic, and I want to share what I feel is important to me.
Allow me to be clear: I feel war is not the answer. It isn't the answer if the whole
world has the same common goal...Peace! Unfortunately, not everyone in this world
wants, or lives, by Peace.
Bring the megalomaniacs of the world in your home, with your family. What
do you do when these people bring such pain to your family? Unfortunately, reality
sets in, and the megalomaniac must go.
I've seen positive and negative steps taken by our government, as well as other leaders
in the world. In the 1960s and '70s, I've seen activists exercise their right of
free speech. During the Vietnam War, the government and activist created a society
that was unpleasant at best. Soldiers were not welcome in their own hometowns. The
government that WE put in place was hated, and people rebelled, thinking that it
was the solution. The only solution is Peace, and rebellion has no place in Peace.
During the MLK weekend, I was witness to hundreds of thousands of people uniting
around the world in protest of the direction the world is going. Well, I hope that
was their intention. I say this, because I had mixed feelings from what I witnessed
on the news, a medium that may not be 100 percent accurate. What I felt was disappointment
when I heard so many express anger and hate in the speeches. I understand how, in
the moment, anger, rage and even frustration could set in when expressing one's feelings
about the current situation. But anger, rage and even frustration are not a part
of my idea of what it takes to obtain Peace in my world!
Some of the leaders of said protest challenged the government, as well as the world,
to find another solution other than war. If I were to challenge anyone to do anything,
it would be to LIVE your Peace. Leave Anger, Angst, Rage and Hate out of a movement
that expresses Peace. That is the answer.
It seems the environment that my father came back to in the late '60s here in the
States was unhealthy at best. The government, how wrong you may feel it is, takes
time to ensure that statements and decisions made are the best for that situation.
I pray that influential people standing behind microphones take the same time to
ensure that the environment that they are creating is one of Peace and not of one
of Hate. It's pretty simple: If you yell with hate, that is all you can expect in
return. Just love and pray for Peace. Surround yourself with those thoughts and that
is the environment you'll be in.
Obviously, this is my perspective of what I experienced after hearing some of the
speeches. Just as I am now, they were expressing their feelings -- and expressing
their FEARS on the current situation. I like to hold the same level of responsibility
for my actions, as I do for the Government that I might be passing judgment on. Not
to discredit the thousands who will suffer due to a war abroad, let's not forget
the thousands of people who will suffer here due to personal judgment.
This is nothing more than a plea for everyone to ensure that the environment they
share is not harmed because of a simple choice of words. Peace can be attained with
consistency. Let's not lose sight of all our goals.
"The Last Grasp at Peace" came to me late last night. It was done in mixed
media. This may be the last-ditch effort (one arm), for Peace in this world. This
could get ugly, but maintaining the ultimate goal of a UNITED PEACEFUL Earth should
prevail if that is what we (the world) really wish with all of our hearts, minds
and souls. Pray for Peace!
